Swedish Massage

The term “Swedish massage” refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.

Swedish massage:

  • shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes;

  • increases circulation without increasing heart load;

  • stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable;

  • stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time;

  • reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management; and carries out many specific medical uses.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the body’s surface. Deep muscle techniques involve slow strokes, direct pressure or friction movements that go across the muscle grain.

Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury), repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, and muscle spasms.

Sports Massage

Massage not only feels good, but can also provide an edge for sports training and performance. All athletes look for a way to help them train more effectively, perform better and overcome injuries more quickly. Sports massage techniques deliver for both the professional and amateur athlete.

Regular sports massage can:

  • Reduce the chance of injury by relieving stress points in muscles before they result in restrictions or spasm.

  • Improve range of motion and muscle flexibility, resulting in improved power and performance.

  • Shorten recovery time between workouts.

  • Maximize the supply of nutrients and oxygen through increased blood flow.

  • Facilitate the body’s regular processes for recovery from exercise.

  • Decrease performance anxiety and sharpen mental focus.

Prenatal Massage

A prenatal massage not only soothes and comforts, but also provides several health benefits for expectant mothers. It relieves the tensions and aches caused by the extra weight and postural shifts in the body, increases blood and lymph circulation which can reduce swelling, soothes the nervous system, acts as a tonic, reduces fatigue, and enhances energy. The supportive touch of massage can help with the mental and emotional strains of pregnancy as well.

After delivery, postpartum massage can help restore the body to its pre-pregnant condition. It also addresses the stress of caring for and carrying a newborn. It can speed the recovery by bringing relief of sore muscles and help the mother to relax more easily.

Hot Stone Massage

The stones are immersed in water and heated in an electric heating device until they are within a certain temperature range. The stones may be placed at specific points on the back, in the palms of the hand, or between the toes. The heat warms and relaxes the muscles, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure, if desired. The warmth of the hot stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system. Some massage therapists place stones on points that are thought to be energy centers of the body to rebalance the body and mind.

Many people find the warmth of the hot stones to be comforting. Hot stone massage is suited to people who tend to feel chilly or who have cold feet. It’s also suited for people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The heat relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to work the muscles without using deep pressure.

Couple’s Massage

What is a couples massage? It’s a massage experience for two that has real benefits, for physical, mental, and relationship health. Ultimately, a couples massage is a shared experience – a massage for two people, at the same time, in the same private room, but on two separate massage tables and performed by two massage therapists. The massage therapists will start at the same time and coordinate the treatment for the couple.

A couples massage can be a great way to enhance the mental and physical benefits of the massage experience. While it’s common to choose a couples massage as part of a day of romance – let’s say, with a spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend – it’s also normal to opt for this treatment with a friend or other loved one.
